JOW Architects is a Singapore-based, inter-disciplinary architectural design practice providing the full scope of architectural and interior design consultancy services. It specialises in high-end residential, hospitality, retail and food and beverage environments.

Founded in 2014, JOW Architects is a dynamic practice led by partners Joseph Wong and Zhenwei Lai, who both have a deep passion for crafting inspiring spaces that are tailored to their client’s individuality. Through the thoughtful, restrained employment of light, form, materials, colours and textures, and attention to detail, JOW Architects desires to create meaningful built environments that are fresh, exciting and yet, relevant and timeless.

Q&A with Lai Zhenwei & Joseph Wong, JOW Architects: We see site conditions as potential design opportunities

You enjoy experimenting and pushing boundaries in your practice. Can you elaborate on what you mean?  It is about challenging what seems to be the norm, and searching for new approaches to tackle the design brief by constantly questioning ourselves. We like to ask if there is another way to achieve the same intent. It is a constant reiterative process of reviewing the problem differently, and editing the solutions to arrive at one that is most suitable. Of course, as architects and interior designers, we are always bound by the physicality of the site and its context. Yet, we see site conditions not as limitations but as potential design opportunities for the development and refinement of design solutions. One of your key priorities is in ensuring your designs make your clients’ lives better. How exactly do you do this?  It is through a distillation process of thoughtful listening to the client’s needs and the careful observation of the things they want but are unspoken. It is easy to miss HKR House. To reach it, you must first pass the rather distracting Edward Lee Apartments – not for its architecture but because of the supercars often haphazardly parked outside. By the time you finish shaking your head over the blasé attitude of the owners towards their million-dollar vehicles, you would have missed JOW Architects’ latest creation.  More’s the pity, if you ask us, though its clients are probably happier this way. After all, from the way HKR House is designed, it is obvious they value privacy. The monochromatic palette also points towards a preference for understatement.  Peel back the layers though and an interesting story unfolds: one where challenging site conditions had to be overcome, coupled with juggling local regulations, all while being careful not to compromise on aesthetics.
