MOD Studio

MOD Studio, headed by Mark Odion, is a Philippines-based interdisciplinary firm providing full architectural services from early concept to final execution with a vision that focuses on creating holistic and thoughtfully crafted design solutions.

MOD’s ethos and philosophy centre on the belief that architecture should be a reflection of the unique needs and aspirations of each client, rather than adhering to a specific design style. Every project is approached with an open mind, prioritizing custom-made solutions that resonate with the individual character of the space and its inhabitants. This commitment to bespoke design enables the crafting of spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and sustainable, adding lasting value to the built environment.

The emphasis is on the importance of building design as a collective symbiosis, where different trades, technology, and materials come together to form a cohesive and harmonious outcome. Collaboration as an essential tool in this process, fostering strong partnerships with clients and industry professionals to ensure that every project is a shared success.

Q&A with Mark Odion, MOD Studio: The particular hallmark of the firm is simplicity

Tell us about the genesis and development of MOD Studio. We founded MOD Studio in 2016. Since then, we’ve sought to redefine our approach to contemporary architecture by merging minimalism, sustainability and user experience. “MOD” meaning Mark Odion Design may also be derived from the words “Modern”, “Modular”, or “Modify”, reflecting the firm’s philosophy. The studio’s debut works included small to medium-scale residential, commercial, and institutional spaces. These projects helped establish the firm’s approach of catering to tailor-fit design solutions and its reputation for clean lines, functional layouts, and innovative material use. The introduction of a new partner came with my marriage to another architect, Maria Katrina Peredo Odion. The impact on the studio’s development of this was a creative synergy and business expansion. With two leaders, the firm could take on larger or more diverse projects, leveraging combined industry connections. Roles were divided naturally, one focusing on design innovation, the other on operations or client relations, creating a more balanced leadership. What are some major residential projects you have recently completed? The Farmhouse, of course, already featured on ADDRESS,…

Having moved to Manila due to the challenges of the pandemic, the clients longed for a space that would echo the serenity of island living they had to leave behind. With this vision in mind, the house was designed as a minimalist tropical retreat, seamlessly blending a resort-like ambience with functionality and hardwearing simplicity. The main entrance makes a bold yet refined statement, featuring a metal door adorned with a solid molave root handle. To keep the structure light and sleek, knife-edge detailing was incorporated into the fascia and chamfered vertical walls, creating delicate, refined lines along the edges. Above the entrance, a 12mm metal canopy extends gracefully, adding to the structure’s minimalist profile. Initially intended to be painted matte black, the canopy developed a natural patina of rust during construction. Noticing how beautifully it harmonized with the home’s palette, the team decided to preserve its raw finish, embracing the serendipity of the…
