MASSONEONG is a boutique design practice based in Singapore specialising in interior architecture, lifestyle and styling. Crafting an immersive experience of space that is unique to every client, its design process begins with a spatial narrative that explores the delicate balance between form and function, solid and void, proportion and materiality. 

A creative partnership between Elisa Massone and Vanessa Ong, it combines 20 years of residential and commercial design experience, working with prestigious architectural and interior design firms across Italy and Singapore. With respective educational backgrounds in Engineering and Architecture at the Università degli Studi di Genova and National University of Singapore, they share a common passion in creating spaces that they love.

Committed to an unwavering pursuit of thoughtful exploration and mastery of their craft, they work across varying scales and disciplines, taking an active role in personally managing projects from ideation till completion. Their focus on fostering strong relationships between their clients and the artisans they work with empower them to deliver beautiful and unique design solutions fuelled by the constant ritual of refinement and excellence.

You both pride yourselves on offering a fresh take on luxury in the built environment. Can you elaborate on what you mean by this and why you felt it needed a makeover?  Luxury is often associated with flashy, high-profile items that scream for attention. But there’s a different kind of luxury that we aim for — one that’s all about understated elegance and refined simplicity. Here, we value quality over quantity, embracing a “less is more” approach where having less is so fabulous that anything more becomes redundant. When you design residential projects (including showflats), you also place an importance on the curation and styling of the spaces. Why are these important to you?  Curation and styling add personality to a space, elevating good design to one that speaks for itself. Art often plays a role in the design process, while styling serves as the beautiful finale of a well-thought-out project. At MeyerHouse’s show flat, luxury interior design has been redefined by MASSONEONG

In their ideal world, MASSONEONG would have designed this project for a French art gallery owner married to a Chinese lady. This is an important exercise it undergoes when it conceptualises show flats, and was what it imagined when commissioned the one for MeyerHouse, a freehold luxury condominium development in Mountbatten.  “We invent our own clients,” quips Elisa Massone, one of the two Directors of the firm. The other is Vanessa Ong, who adds, “With show flats, we basically have a blank canvas to work with, which we really enjoy.” The east-meets-west theme they decided on clearly flows through into the four-bedroom unit. For instance, there is furniture by the French designer Charlotte Perriand and a wallpaper printed with scenes from a traditional Chinese garden.  Yet, rather than kitsch, the curation is done in a tasteful, elegant and extremely understated manner, hinting that there is more to it than meets the eye.
